Purnima or Poornima is an auspicious day in Hinduism. Poornima is the full moon day and many important rituals and festivals takes place on full moon day. In South India , the day is known as Pournami. Upvaas (Fasting) is observed on this day by some people.
The Purnima Fasting begins at Sunrise and ends after sighting the Moon. Most people only take food after seeing the moon or after evening prayers.
In some places in South India , the Pournami Vratam is dedicated to Devi, Mother Goddess.
Special pujas are performed in temples on Poornima day including the Pournami Pooja.

I spoke to a swami ji,He told me that we can have fruit, milk and water .cereals and sodium (I mean Anaaj and Namak ) are to be avoided in this upvaas
Thank you for posting added information. This is very useful information for me. We should add more information about this upvaas that what is the fruit of this upvaas and how many upvaaas we should have in order to get the fruit.
Can you tell e how does one calculate the time for the Purnima fast if based in west coast usa?
Should we follow India time or follow the local time??
You can easily find the full moon day in your region. There are numerous calendars and panchang that calculate us time. Or you can make us of Full moon calculators - like this one here http://www.atlantisring.com/moonphase.htm
There is no harm in following the Indian time for observing vrat.
I am not agree to the idea of following indian time .We should follow our local time to obsearve this fast.
If Someone needs to controll his/her mood he must do poornima and amawashya vrat. Its helps in controlling ups and down of the mood(bi - polar disorder). Observe if you are disturbed without any reason on days near poornima or amwashya. In That case this vrat will help you a lot. Bad effects of moon on your chart will be corrected. Sweetbird19atgmail
I have been observing the Purnima vrat since last few years. I would like to tell people through this post that the vrat has been a great part of my life. It has given me inner peace, trust and believe in God and even in myself. It has also helped me in my hard times and is very fruitful.
Hi could you please tell me is this vrat fullfilled the desire of child. As i am trying for child from last 4yrs?
Hi,
I don't claim that it fulfills the desire for a child but the katha actually says that it does, I know a friend, who did it and was blessed with a child. Follow the instructions for observing it, do the katha.I personally believe and was also told by a learned man that in order to fulfil your wish you need to keep atleast 5 purnima vrats in a row(ie, for 5 months)It works for me,hope it works for you too. I wish it fulfills your dream soon. Good luck
i want to know the procedure for the udyapan of purnima vrat, as my mom is doing this vrat since last 25 years. pls help.
Namaste.
I am also asked to take the brat for 16 poonimaas. this is my 4th month an last two month i had period so could not follow it and in one pornimaa, i ate non veg food as one of the prist said it doesn't matter if you follow or not as i am impure and would not effect anything. should I restart the poornima brat or just continue it and do 18 brat instead of 16. what shall i do if there are two days poornima as this ashwin month, i could see there are two poornimas.
i want to know procedure of kartik & Poornima udyapan.
vanakkum!
I think that some in some things (where the movement of great astrological bodies is involved) it seems more logical to follow the times as defined in India, where as in others (where the movement of close astrological bodies is concerned) we should use locally observed events. However I am confused by the idea of fasting from sunrise to sunset in my case, as I live in the middle of a large mountain range and in a steep sided deep valley (3.8km altitude between me and the top of the southern wall). I am also relatively far north. (I am at the foot of Mt Blanc, near Geneva). This means that, especially at this time of year I have very late observed sunrises and moon rises, and very early sunsets and moonsets. When, as I often do, I go to the top of a mountain to observe these events, the situation is different, however otherwise to observe the sea-level rising and setting times does not necessarily make sense as there is still a SIGNIFICANT amount of earth between myself and the event.
Does anyone have any thoughts?
what happens after the fast you are unable to view the moon - is this considered as a full fast?
Yes it is a full fast. It is not always possible to view the full moon due to clouds etc. You can look into panchang or calendar and note the moon rise time and break the fast.
hi i've going through a very difficult time in my marriage and someone told me to do this full moon fast but didn't say for how many weeks or month
Purnima Vrat is performed once a month. You can do it for a year or more.
you can do poornima vrat for 11 months, you can have lunch or dinner, or ifpossible just fruits.
dear sir, i would be grateful if u could kindly give methods of puja in poornima and what foods i must take .
i wanted 2 no how do we perform the puja for the full moon.. i fast since last 2 prunimas.. but i want 2 do it in the ritualistic manner...
There are no major rituals. There is only vrat. You can pray to your personal deity. Once in a while if you are interested you can perform the Satyanarayana Puja with the help of a priest.
I was told by a friend that you should first wake up early wash and start praying Sukhmani Sahib path and complete it and wait for the moon bow to moon and then break fast. What is your procedure?
All Rubbish...Go and Have your food...right now...
you all super stitious.....
Please go and have food, to treat the Acid generated in your stomach, if the food is not there to burnt the acid will spoil your stomach and leads to Ulcer...If you are fasting..be prepare for Ulcer...
Dear anonymous first of all if you have problem with purnima fasting please do not observe it. You do not have any right to criticize people who want to observe it.
Secondly why are you so much bothered about a single day fast in a month when there are other religions that fast for a month. You should first go to them.
Lastly have guts to put your name.

Moon in Tantra symbolizes the point in brain where Devi is worshiped by the Tantric sects called Samayi's. This point is also called Bindu (which resides just above the Ajna chakra (the point between the eyebrows) and the Sahasrara Chakra (at the top point of head. Moon symbolizes ecstasy or bliss when the ishta devatha manifests herself there by the worship of the Sadhaka. Devi's power reaches there from Kundalini (which resides at the bottom edge of the spine) by worship.
Tantra marks resemblance between the cosmic moon and the Bindu. Full moon is auspicious because it represents the radiance of the Amrit (ecstasy or bliss) from Bindu when Devi is pleased.
For observing the fasting, one needs full devotion. Mental purity is the first thing, because moon is directly related to mind in Tantra. Wake up at least by 5.30 am, do the poojas and chanting of Devi mantras (which are advised by a Guru). After pooja, one may take a glass of milk (but certainly not tea or coffee, because it has caffeine). Take a banana if hunger persists. Better control thurst and hunger as long as possible, but if not, take milk or water, nuts or banana. In the evening, do Devi pooja or prayer again and watch the full moon (if possible, watch clearly, not through the branches of trees or clouds etc.). Bestow the moon for the completion of the fasting. After that one may take light vegetarian meals without salt and onion/garlic.
If you decide to take Pournami Vrat, better not to break it unless you have periods or inevitable matters. This vrat has powerful consequences. So, the intention should be clear and good, prayers should be as sincere as possible.
Best wishes,
Jinesh
want to know the udyapan vidhi of purnima fast....
People do fasting on different occasion.Like the ganesha chaturthi 2012 is coming on the 19th ,so I want to fast on that date so what should I eat ?
Fasting can be done as per your convenience. I am new to fasting, so I have just started with taking fruits for dinner (taking a light breakfast and lunch). I will next move to doing a full day fruit meals and then to a single fruit meal before I go on to water only fast.
No compulsions.
Those who are medically ill and elderly have to take precautions. Suddenly trying fasts at age 60 is not great. It is nice to see that karann (1986) is starting young !
Can I eat chocolate....plain dairy milk chocolate in pooranmashi fast??
