Amavasi, or Amavasya, is the new moon day in Hindu calendar and is the darkest day in the month. The fortnight that starts with Amavasi is the Shukla Paksha or the waxing phase of the moon. In June 2008, the date of Amavasi is June 3.
Many people choose the Amavasya day to perform the rituals dedicated to dead ancestors. Some people observe a fast on the day and only take a single meal.
