Adi Shankara Jayanti 2008

Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti or Shankara Jayanthi falls on the 5th day during waxing of moon in the month of Vaisakh (May-June). Although there is a difference of opinion regarding the period of Adi Shankara, his birthday is celebrated annually on the same day – on the 5th day of the Shukla Paksha of Vaisakha. In 2008, the date of Adi Shankara Jayanti is May 9.

One of India’s greatest philosopher and saint, Shankara appeared at a time when there was a complete destruction of culture and morality. There was utter chaos and confusion and Shankaracharya set the house in order with his peaceful message of Vedanta. He used the unparalled teachings in the Vedas and the Upanishads to give form to the concept of religion, which was still not practiced by Sanatana Dharma.

Adi Shankaracharya is also considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva by many people.

The right way to honor this great saint is to study his works. A single idea of his, if adopted with sincerity can make you a better person.
