Hanuman Jayanthi 2008

Hanuman Jayanti, the birthday of Lord Hanuman, falls on the full moon day in the month of Chaithra (March – April). Also referred as Bajrang Bali and Anjaneya, Hanuman is one of the most popular gods in the Hindu pantheon and is a Chiranjeevi – one blessed with immortality. For many Hindus, Hanuman is a guardian angel. In 2008, the date of Hanuman Jayanthi is April 20.

In Andhra Pradesh, the 41-day Hanuman Jayanti Deeksha begins on April 20 and ends on May 30, 2008.

In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanti is observed during Margazhi month (December - January).

The greatest devotee of Lord Ram, Hanuman symbolizes strength and unparalleled devotion and selfless service. He is a Brahmachari (celibate) and humility is his hallmark.

What Hanuman is was best explained by Shri Rama in the Ramayana

Lord Ram said to Hanuman, ‘I am greatly indebted to you, O mighty hero. You did marvelous, superhuman deeds. You do not want anything in return. … you have not asked for anything at any time. You threw away the precious garland of pearls given to you by Sita.

How can I repay my debt of gratitude to you? I will always remain deeply indebted to you.

I give you the boon of everlasting life. All will honor and worship you like myself. Your idol will be placed at the door of my temple and you will be worshipped and honored first. Whenever my stories are recited or glories sung, your glory will be sung before mine. You will be able to do anything, even that which I will not be able to!’

On Hanuman Jayanti day, many devotees observe an upvaas or fast and recite the Hanuman Chalisa.

But Hanuman will be more pleased to here Ram Ram. Because he is always present where stories of Ram is being narrated. He joins in all prayers dedicated to Lord Ram. Such is the devotion of Hanuman the true Karma Yogi.
