Each Day of a Week Dedicated to a Particular Hindu God

In Hinduism, each day of a week is dedicated to a particular god in the Hindu pantheon. Apart from the special Vratas and Upvaas, many Hindus also fast on a particular day in a week. Each day in a week has a specialty and there are numerous folklores associated with the fasting observed on the days of a week.

Sunday
Sunday is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God). Those who undertake fast (upvaas) on the day only take a single meal. Oil and salt is avoided. Red is the color of the day and red flowers are offered to Surya. (more details)

Monday
Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that Lord Shiva is easily pleased. Therefore many people observe Upvaas on Monday. Those devotees observing fast only eat food once. People visit Lord Shiva shrines and conduct pujas, especially, Ardhanarishwara puja. The mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is chanted continuously. Siva devotees also read Shiva Purana. Unmarried women observe the Vrat to get good husbands. Others observe it for a happy and prosperous family life. (more details)

Tuesday
Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Durga, Goddess Kali and Lord Hanuman. Most devotees visit Devi and Hanuman shrines. Those people who fast avoid taking food containing salt at night. (more details)

Wednesday
Wednesday is dedicated to planet Mercury and Lord Vithal, an incarnation of Krishna. Green color leaves, especially Tulsi leaves, are used in Pujas. The day is highly auspicious for starting new ventures and it is believed that those who observe the Vrat are bound to get blessed with fortunes. People also give alms on the day. (more details)

Thursday
Thursday is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his incarnations. Pujas are conducted using milk, ghee etc. Food is only eaten once and that too containing milk products. People read Srimad Bhagavad Purana on the day. (more details)

Friday
Friday is dedicated to Mother Goddess – Mahalakshmi, Santhosi Ma, Annapuraneshwari and Durga. Sweets are distributed on the day. Those devotees observing the Vrat make it a point to eat at night. (more details)

Saturday
Saturday is dedicated to alleviating the bad influence of Lord Shani. The Vrat on this day is mainly observed by those people who believe in Hindu astrology. Black is the color of the day and people visit Shani shrine or Navagraha shrines. Food is only consumed once on the day. (more details)

It must be noted here that the deity worshipped on a particular day might vary from region to region and community to community. The result of all upvaas or fast depends on the person. It is good, if all the members in the family can undertake a Vrata together.

Miracles do happen by observing a particular Vrata and the greatest miracle is Brahman realization. All rituals and observances are path towards understanding the Supreme Soul and this will automatically alleviate all sufferings.

Thank you so much for this. I've been fasting for many years and never knew the true reasons behind it. I've been looking for an explanation for a long time. This was perfect.

Happy Diwali!

Wednesday is also considered to be the day for Ganeshji. I have seen people doing special pujas and keeping upvas for Ganeshji on wednesday..

I have always assumed and it is always taught to me in childhood that Thursday belongs to Maa Laxmi. But, now I am hearing a new thing. I belong to a state (Orissa) where we perform Laxmi pooja and read Laxmi Purana on every Thursday in the month of Margasirsa (comes after Kartika and before Pausa). I am not unhappy with Maa being worshipped on Thursday or Friday. But just to understand..how come it is totally a different day altogether. Or is it the case - the god/godess are worshipped on different days in different parts of India.

Am a muslim and i love a hindu..can i keep these vrats?

Anonymous said...

My dear Muslim bro/sis,
I usually search for scientific reasons behind religious believes and i found out that fasting is good for health. Our gastrointestinal tracts works day in and day out and giving rest to them by observing fast, not only re-vitalizes the GI tract but also cleanses our body of all the accumulated toxins. Since people don't fast if u tell them to do so, so probably our ancestors cleverly made us to fast by linking it to some GOD's name to it. That's all. I believe the concept of fasting is there is every religion.

Actually for your information thursday is also the day for the Guru. Actually there is only one consciousnss not 2 so every day belongs to all gods and godesses--what moment in time does not belong to the supreme?, main thing is not to demarcate or to differntiate but see the unity. Yes many hindu temples celebrate on certain days according to the above, This is an informative article, thank you.

i am a hindu. i believe in advaita siddhantha. accordingly there is only one god which is present everywhere, who is the creator of every living and non living things, who is the universal energy which lightens every being in this universe. Fasting actually helps us to enlighten ourself and makes us realise the truth that our athma is a miniature of the parabrahma.

There are Gayatri Mantra for every form of the God and it is easy to say them as you like on the particular days!!
Thanks

srijit said...

Hi All,
As said in advaita "Every drop of water from the sky merges with the sea , The Universal self is infinite….This individual self is infinite, The infinite universe is created out of infinity".... and as said in Emerald Tablet " What is the above is from the below and the below is from the above. The work of wonders is from one" .... realising the atman.... the para brahma .... realising the pure self is the accurate path to bliss. Taking vrata and fast is a method to be prepared to start climbing the steps of self realization. So people want to realise can def. go ahead with all the rituals till you get prepared and start hardcore meditation and Kundalini techniques to reach perfection.

Saturday is for Hanuman. The story behind it is as follows ---- During his first vistit to Lanka, when Lord Hanuman's was burning whole of Lanka, Hanuman-ji observed that one part of Lanka was not burning besides big flames of fire. Hanuman-ji visited that part of Lanka and found that inside a jail one person was hanging upside down and that person's hands were tied with rope. Hanuman-ji untied him and asked him why he is in such critical condition. That person payed many thanks to Hanuman-ji for getting him free and explained how he was prisioned by Ravana in this jail. This person was none other than Lord Shani. During Ravana's conquer on heaven, Ravana got hold of Shani Dev and prisoned him at Lanka. It was the great positive energy of Shani Dev that was not allowing one part of Lanka to get burnt.
So after paying many thanks to Hanuman-ji, Shani Dev promised to Hanuman ji that one who will put Sinduur on your Idol on Saturday, I will be happy with him and will get him rid of all bad luck.

Part I
Hi Abhilash. I am also an Abhilash. Nice to read the blog. I would like to put more light on these subject. Everyone is aware about the diversity of Indian culture. We have and will have several gods. No one is superior or inferior to one another. One of us had above mentioned advaita siddanta. So the question will arise how one is become several. Have ever heard about vichara ? We can roughly translate that into "Thought process". Whatever artificial we see today came out of the Vichara of living beings. Human being shares a very small part of it. If we can think and create so many things, some of them are fantastic creativity, why cannot GOD ? What is the most essential and freely available commodity for all ? AIR/OXYGEN (pranavayu). God created all those essential commodity Air. Water, Fire and Earth. Do humans created it, we polluted Air. Water, we poisoned. Earth, we destroying. Once you take a little interest in the Hinduism (not to become a hard core one), you will be excited by the vast Sciences, knowledge and deep consciousness it provide. You do not have become sanyasin for that. Anyone can do that.
So one doctor saab told above that the rituals were created to make lazy people do the scientific activities like fasting. Can a doctor teach me the universal science much better than our ancient Rishis? Is there any encyclopaedia of medical science have the better understanding than the PATANJALI YOGA SUTRA? Is there any better secret in the science than tripura rahasya? Which branch of the medical science is not influenced by TANTRA SATRA? Read the II part..

phoenix_4u said...

Part II
Seven days a week is not the western thing. It is Indian. Our ancestors mentioned it in Rigveda and some other samhita also. To know more read the SCIENTIFIC DATING OF RAMAYANA AND VEDAS by DR PV Vartak. It is a good reading and mind boggling. Anybody interested can mail me on phoenixvedicastrology@gmail.com requesting for a Ebook. So the seven days given to seven planets and each planet have graha Lords. So the weekly worship of different gods is from Veda era. Later various branches came into existence. The displacement of the people, the geographical condition, social status, revolutionary thinking etc... provide more and more ideology. example with in India, Geographically Vigneshwar and Krishna is prominent in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Kali and durga mata in Assam and West Bengal. Gujrat have Durga mata and Krishna. UP, Bihar and some other Northern States observe the Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Chat Puja as the main god related festivals. Orissa is for Jaganath (Balram, Subhadra and Krishna). Come to south AP is for Balaji, TN for Sri Muruga (Kartikeya) and Kerala for Ayyapa. Lord Siva have thousands of temples all over India. He is the most worshiped god India and other Hindus residing countries followed by VISHNU and MATAji (Durga, Saraswathi, Lakshmi or Kali. Tirupati is the most richest temple in India. Now it is clear that from our vedic days to today we have several gods existed through different environment. So we can take another shot at week days and there Lords.

phoenix_4u said...

Part III
Starting from Sunday - Sun god, Fire god, Sri Ram and saraswati.
Monday - Siva, moon, Ayur deavata,Lord Yama, Varuna, Indra and the different partial incarnation of SIVA (Siva is not supposed to take full incarnation).Hanumanji is not a incarnation of Siva according to Valmiki Ramayana.
Tuesday - Pavan Putra Hanuman, Ganeshji, Sri Murugan, Mars.
Wednesday - Krishna, Vithal, Budha
Thursday - Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, Sai Baba, Ganesh
Friday - Is exclusively for all Mothers.
Saturday - Sani Dev, Ayyappa, If required Bajrangbali. The story mentioned about the lanka dahan has a small correction required. Lord Shani was in Ravan's custody and the Fire lit by Hanumanji freed shani from the demonized majic. For this help, shani promised to stayaway from Bhakta Maruti's Devotee. To escape from Shani dosha people recite hanuman chalisa on Saturday also. I have a lot to write but time does not permit. I will leave here a link to my blog in future. (When I complete the whole story. I wish, no one is provoked by my humble attempt. Kindly forgive nay spelling mistakes. Jai Sri Ram, Om Namasivaya, Jai Bajrangbali Jai Matadi. There are several medicines are available for fever or any other ill. Like that for every problem different remedies through different gods are available. They are here for that purpose also.Jai HIND

I stumbled on this great Site - after researching what "Seeta Jayanti" signifies. Hence, I am a proud Hindu by birth. However, I don't know how to speak/read Hindi/Sanskrit, but I'm trying and it seems fruitless. As many of the posts suggested, these Gods are worshiped almost any day depending on the geography, which is why I can't speak Hindi, because my fore-parents/ancestors was displaced by, yes you know who - the British to South America. I literally grew-up in a western/English society. Some of the ancestors thought their children the Hindu way-of-life while others did not and I guess I was one of the unlucky one. Growing up I heard and I kept away from Hindu movies and songs, simply because I didn't understand the language. In school, I would usually hear some other kids saying that they are fasting and never understand why.
But for the past 20 plus years I've been fasting on every Thursdays - I don't think I've broken that streak - and would also do it on any auspicious day/days when I hear of it/them.
The thing with me is that I just do it because I like doing it and nothing will change that even if Lord Siva or Lord Krishna appears in front of me and say that "you should break your fast." Bottom line, as mentioned; I don't know the language and I sure don't know the significance but I am trying my best to understand. I'm at the point in life where anything material is not significant. My mother thought me to be content with what I have and if I can shed-off all worldly possessions and not be bothered by politics, I would sure do it. I long for and would like to be in a place with like-minded people where not thing really matters except the truth.

Sir,
I want to know the basis of week days, why today it is Sunday? What was the special position of the planet Earth, yesterday,
that caused it to denote by Saturn's day.
Through out the globe, in every civilization, what so ever it's position in the globe is,every one has planed a week of 7 days uniformly. I think that all of those civilizations were not having the facility like net, as we are having today, then how they all came to the conclusion to make 7 days week uniformly . We (Hindu) call it Ravi var they denote it by Sun day, same way Shani var is Saturn day. My question is why it is Saturn's day. What planet Saturn make special effect to our planet Earth on that particular day of the week ? There is a long history how the new era calender was formed, & modified time to time. After the final outcome we are having this calender having 12 months, January to December in every year.(pl excuse me i am not talking about formation of Hindu calender, it may have a strong background, but i do not know much about it's origin.). I have not heard of any such similar background , about formation of weekdays. It is requested please oblige me to satisfy my curiosity. - Rajendra Verma

I don't understand the logic of this concept. Did god announced that you should eat milk products on this day and something on the other. If you want to call all this cultural, then you can. But atleast don't connect this rubbish with god or religion, if religion is about god according to you. I am no one else but a hindu myself. But i wonder on the ignorance of people who are following rituals made by other men ( or pundits). You do'nt find god by doing all this stuff. Don't know when the world will understand this. All these lakhs of devi devataas can't be god. the truth is one. God is one for every human. I am sorry to say but Hindus are quite confused which god to choose for their convenience.

IT MEANS THAT THERE SHOULD BE A COMPLETE CONTROL OVER YOUR EATING DESIRES FOR A DAY...
