Universal Society of Hinduism

Few days back several online newspapers carried a report about the formation of an organization named ‘Universal Society of Hinduism’ (USH). The President of the society is the Nevada-based Hindu priest Rajan Zed, who came into limelight by delivering open prayers in various state assemblies and the Senate. The executive director of the society is Journalist Dharam Loonaa.

The newspaper reports said the organization aims to provide worldwide Hindu identity, enhance understanding of Hinduism, to foster inter-religious dialogue and to promote the ethics, spirit, culture and philosophy of Hindu heritage.

But the formation of the organization was not reported by any prominent newspapers. Neither was I able to locate the website of the organization. I guess the organization is in its infancy.

But yesterday some of the major newspapers and television channels did report that the Universal Society of Hinduism has expressed fear that the upcoming Hollywood movie ‘The Love Guru’ may lampoon the religion and has demanded that it be shown to the society members for vetting before release.

I guess this is the first major campaign of the society in protecting Hindu identity.

I appreciated efforts being done of Rajan Zed for the identity of Hindus. But a lot of things still needs to be done and a worldwide support is needed for this cause.

I commend Mr. Zed for speaking out on the pics of a nude man at Pushkar at the exhibition in finland. Nudity is not a problem in Hinduism. But the alacrity with which other cultures take liberty in representing Hinduism is shocking. Ganesa on flipflops, shiva on sneakers etc. Its time that Hindus as a whole show some offence at the loose portrayal of Hindu gods and practices.

The main threat to Hindusim is not from using Lord ganesh's pictures of flip-flops, etc. The real therea is two folded: 1. chritian missionaries converting poor Hindus to Christianity 2. many wifes and many children to Muslims.

I hope they will use their influence wiser behind the scenes. One should be careful about these kind of protests. It can have disastrous effect on public opinion. (Cartoon crises).

As a westerner I can tell you that in Europe people are used to atheists making fun of religion and they defend that as a constitutional right. If you challenge these people, they will react by even more provocative action. In the end you will be ridiculed even more or your reputation of tolerant people will be seriously damaged.

It is a comedy, for westerners this means, it has not to be taken seriously. There is a golden saying when you are ridiculed in the media:

When you are being shaved
Sit still!

Further, this movie does hurt neither God nor Hinduism. God can not be hurt and Hinduism can use some publicity. This is not negative publicity per se. Henri Ford said: I do not care what they say about me, as long as the talk about me.

Hinduism is a big unknown in the west. But yoga, meditation, Aryuveda, Vedanta philosophy, even tantric techniques are spreading. As long as you can laugh about it, it is not a danger. In the end it may make people more curious about the real thing and create bigger understanding.

Like another saying goes: what is unknown is also unliked.

You can probably get a hold of Rajan Zed, but unless you have a news camera he's not likely to have time for you. He's too busy promoting himself and his made up organization.

I appreciate the commendable work of Shri Zed ji.
May he continue to be blessed with good health, wealth and wisdom so that
he keeps serving the Hindus all over the world. I am sure he will keep in mind the plight of Indians and in particular the Hindus scattered in the Pacific region especially the descendants of the girmitiyas. We need a voice at global level.

Why is anyone worried about a dent being created in Hinduism by any sort of negative speech, action or comments?! Is it ever possible?? Think! This way of life has traveled through centuries, nay millenniums, and yet the mammoth roller coaster goes on and on !! We Hindus,in today's world, seem to have become so shaky about our roots that we have actually started thinking that it can be shaken! That just means we don't know a bit of our own religion and its depth!

Can you make a hole in the air? No! Similarly only religions rigid and erect in their egos can be punctured, not the one like ours which bends and lets the strong wind pass over and accommodates all, the devil and the god in one big embrace of unity !

A religion which has the temerity to speak of sex and super consciousness in the same breath CANNOT be destroyed!! It's roots and values lie much deeper and beyond and cannot be tampered with...

I need to raise the issue of our homeless brothers- The Kashmiri Pundits- who have been illegally displaced from their original homeland Kashmiri by members of another religion...

A Dharma, which once had sway from Bali in the East to Afghanistan in the West, has been consistently eroded, shrunk and marginalized by marauding armies of other clans.

Before we talk of equality and secularism, all the Kashmiri brothers without a single exception have to be returned home where they belonged.

Is there a website for the Universal Society of Hinduism or any way to gain more information on them?

Based on the guarantees of our First Amendment, I believe we Hindus ought to establish, structure and develop our Hindu Ecclesiastical Court System so that we would have adjudicatory powers outside secular influence and authority.

I welcome comments. Please email me at scripturalaw@yahoo.co.uk
