Devipatinam – Navapashanam Where Rama Worshipped Navagrahas before going to Lanka

Devipattinam or Devipatinam is a coastal village near Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. It is believed that the Lord Ram prayed to Navagrahas at Devipattinam before embarking on his journey to Lanka. Lord Ram placed nine stones as symbols of the nine planets, Navagrahas, at Devipattanam and therefore the place is also known as Navapashanam or Navabashana. It is an important place visited by pilgrims on the way to Rameshwaram Dhaam.

The nine stones placed upright by Lord Ram can be still seen in the water close to the beach near a bathing ghat of the Thilakeshwar Temple, also known as Navagraha Temple. The nine stones symbolize the nine planets or Navagrahas. Lord Ram performed the ritual so that the nine planets would shed their auspicious light on him in the battle with Ravana to rescue Sita.

The Thilakeshwar Temple is dedicated to Shiva and Parvathi (Durga). Shiva here is known as Thilakeswarar and the Goddess is known as Soundaryanayaki. The shrine has a beautiful image of an eight-armed Durga with weapons. The deity in the temple is worshipped with tila or gingelly seeds.

People come from India and around the world to Devipattinam to perform Tarpan for the ancestors.

Devipattinam is around 14 km northeast of Ramanathapuram.

This is really a useful info. I had been to Devipatnam last week but found that the new arrangement has spoiled the water quality there since water is stagnating instead of flushing with the ocean flow. Also found that the deities too are getting polluted bcoz of this water stagnation. I heard from my mother that the water was once very clean but really shocked to see this. These are really treasures to be protected and its our duty to take the matter to the officials concerned to take due steps to protect this divine place from further contamination. Can you pls give me the email address or contact details of concerned officials ? thank you - Vaishnavi, India, Chennai.

I had the privilege of visiting the worshipful NAVAGRAHA temple at Devipattina. A very pious and worth visiting place. I really enjoyed my trip to this holy place at the sea bed. But one thing I wish to mention about the unhygenic condition surrounding the holy place bcoz of wster stagnation and stench in and around . It is high time we take care of this aspect of the sanctum sanctorium in good hygenic condition to inculculate the holy atmosphere. It is the responsibility of the Hindu citizens of our beloved country to go all out in keeping the Shirine very clean. Local people to come forward and put their genuine effort to keep the place tidy and clean so that the treasure handed down to us by Lord Rama can be put to best use by the devotees who throng the place from far and nearby places.
