How to perform Ganesh Chaturthi Puja at Home?

Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is one of the most colorful and widely celebrated festivals in India. Large number of people observe Ganesha Chaturthi poojas at home. Here is an explanation on how to perform Ganesha puja at home as mentioned in Hindu scriptures.
Ganesha puja on the Chaturthi day is usually performed at noon but nowadays people perform it when all the family members are present.

Requirements
  • A Clay image of Lord Ganesha.
  • Red flowers
  • Druva Grass blades
  • Modak (jaggery filled sweet)
  • Coconut
  • Red chandan (Sandalwood paste)
  • Incense and agarbathis
The Puja
  • First clean the house and take a bath.
  • A Clay image of Lord Ganesha is installed in a raised platform.
  • Pray to Lord Ganesh and you can recite mantras or bhajans dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
  • Next step is to invoke Ganesha into the image. This is known as pran-prathishta. The Pran Prathista mantra in Sanskrit to be invoked is found in the Rig Veda and is part of Ganesh Suktha.
ganananh tva ganapatim havamahe kavim kavinam - upamashravastamam |
jyeshhtharajam brahmanan.h brahmanaspata A nah shrivnvannutibhih sida sadanam || (Rig Veda 2.23.1)
ni shhu sida ganapate ganeshhu tvamahurvipratamam kavinam |
na rite tvat.h kriyate kinchanare mahamarkam maghavan.h chitramarcha || (Rig Veda 10.112.9)
We invoke You, O Ganapati of the ganas (Lord Shiva attendants), Who are Brahmana-spati of the brahmas (prayers), the wisest among the wise, Who abound in treasure beyond all measure, the most brilliant one. Do listen to our prayers, come with Your blessings and assurances of protection into our home, and be seated. (Rig Veda 2.23.1)
Sit down among the worshippers, O Ganapati, the best sage among the sages. Without You nothing can be done here or far. Accept with honor, O wealthy One, our great and variegated hymns of praise. (Rig Veda 10.112.9)
  • Now Ganesha is installed in the idol and one can perform arati and light the lamps. Some people perform the shhodashopachara, which are 16 forms of paying tribute to Ganesha. (This ritual is usually performed by the priests, you can skip this.)
  • Offer 21 blades of Druva Grass.
  • Offer 21 modakas
  • Offer red flowers
  • Apply a tilak using red Sandalwood paste.
  • Break the coconut or just keep it along with the idol. You can also keep fried grains. (The food of the rat – the vehicle of Ganesha).
  • You can also recite the 108 salutations dedicated to Lord Ganesha or read the Ganesha Upanishad or just simply pray.
The number 21 signifies - the five organs of perception, five organs of action, five vital airs (pranas), five elements, and the mind.

While performing Ganesha Puja at home, you can always be flexible. The strict rituals are meant for Vedic priests. All you need to be careful is to perform the pujas with a clean body and clean mind.

What is more important is devotion not the ritual.

Try to be simple. Concentrate on your prayers not on decoration and other ritualistic details.

I guess it is clearly mentioned in the post. For home you can choose a small clay idol and bring it home. There is no special puja for bringing home the idol.

I will be out of town the day of Ganesh Chaturthi (3-sep-08) for 3 days. Can I do the pooja (i.e. bring the Ganesh idol)after I'm back home, which will be 4 days into Ganesh festival already. I really want to perform the pooja. Please advise.

I am bengali and this time i want to erform Ganesh puja on 3rd sep.I dont have any idea about this puja and i a simply gonna follow what is mentioned here in this blog.I have just one concern ,i am planning of buying Ganesh made of silver, as i want to keep this ganesha in my puja room forever.then what will be immerssion procedure, will i just immerssed it in abucket of water and agin keep the idol in puja room?I will be very thankul to you if someone can answer this query as puja is just day after tomorrow.

abhilash said...

Namaste, Good to know that you are using a silver idol. You can keep it in your puja room. You can perform a symbolic immersion by sprinkling water or by immersing the idol in a bucket of water. You can use the water to water plants.

Is 3 sep the first day or tenth day of ganesh chaturthi in 2008?

Anonymous said...

Thank You for posting this. I am afraid to do any pujas as I feel I might not do them the right way.
I had a question you said perform the shhodashopachara, which are 16 forms of paying tribute to Ganesha.

But you have given only 5 things to do in shodoshopachar puja as follows
(This ritual is usually performed by the priests.)
Offer 21 blades of Druva Grass.
Offer 21 modakas
Offer red flowers
Apply a tilak using red Sandalwood paste.
Break the coconut or just keep it along with the idol. You can also keep fried grains. (The food of the rat – the vehicle of Ganesha).
You can also recite the 108 salutations dedicated to Lord Ganesha or read the Ganesha Upanishad or just simply pray.

where are the rest of them?
please reply, I am not in India, so it is still Tuesday here. so we are celebrating chaturthi tomorrow.

Thank You

You do an elaborate puja or a simple puja there is no difference. What is important is devotion. What is more important is understanding the Brahman – the supreme soul – whose manifestation is Ganesha. Meditating on Ganesha and offering a simple flower and a modak or a banana will be more than enough.

About shhodashopachara – it is stated that it is done by priests, in home it is not always possible to perform such elaborate rituals.

You get scared because you feel Ganesha is outside you, different from you…No...feel the Ganesha within you…Keep your body and mind clean because Ganesha (Brahman) resides in you.

Thanks abhilash for all your details

I am also performing ganesh puja at home from today. but i was not able to clean the whole home. As my home is very bgig and i m the only one to clean home. But i really neatly clean the mandir for ganesh puja. And i also thanks for your suggestion regarding symbolic immersion. Thanks a lot
God bless you.

Dear Abhilash,

I am impressed with your blog. I do Ganesh Sthapana every year, and even not do some of the steps mentioned here. All I care is that I realize Ganesha within me and bring it home so that my kids staying abroad can know how rich culture our rishis has given us. Bringing Ganesh idol brings 'Bhaav' in our life. Last year my 8 year son cried for three days before visarjan day. Every night before going to bed, he would take Ganesh idol in his lap and talk to him that I will not allow you to go. On visarjan day he was determined, not to allow us to do visarjan. Finally we agreed with him. We went to nearby lake, my son put Ganesh idol three times in the water and take it out and then we brought the Ganesh idol home and kept in his room for entire year. I couldn't have bring this much 'Bhaav' towards God otherwise. Ganapati Baapa Morya. This year he agreed with us and said that he will allow us to do visarjan. So, my point is as long as you do Ganesh Pooja with your heart and mind by realizing Ganesh within you, it does not matter if you forget or can't do certain pooja steps.

Abhilash, thank you for the Sankaracharya quote and this very valuable post. I would suggest you put it somewhere where even more people get access to this. God Bless You. - Hiren D. Vashi - Sacramento - California.

Hi I am planning a trip to India for the Ganesh festival. It is said that it falls on the 23 of August. Now is that the first day or the last. Also not being a Hindi and not being able to speak the language is it ok to recite the mantras in english. I have had my Genesh statue for several years but just never knew the proper way to worship. Also where could I buy some of these things out here on the east coast. One more thing is it a specific type of red flower. Thank you for any help that you may be able to give me.

Thanx whoever has posted it!!!!

Only thing I want to know is that can this mantra be given in either kannada, hindi so that the pronounciation can be done correctly.
As we all know that the prayer should or mantra should be recited correctly.
I will be waiting for the hopeful.

23rd Aug is the beginning date of the festival in 2009.

You can perform daily in the evening or morning.

You can keep it for a day or do visarjan on the 3rd, 5th or 7th day or on Anant Chaturdashi day.

i understand it is said to come on 23 aug this year - 2009. but, chavithi is comming on 24th. not 23rd. again it seems we have a confusion here.

and thanks, by the way, that is really informative.

Nice article. Its very true we should have bhaav and shradha in poojan wchever GOD we wish to do pooja.

The only point is any Poojan is profession of many priest so they are going to charge from us and if we invite them its our duty also to give DAKHSHINA to them.

Whether priest is greedy or not,its upto us.Initially decide DAKSHINA and afterwards no kitkit.
Priests shouldnt be blame for this.

Anyway Good articles,if youcant find any priest better to do pooja with your family memebers, frenzs, relatives, neigboursetc.
The festival is to produce spirituality in ones life and make all's life filled with aroma of happiness.

Like many others I am going to do the Puja for the first time and very excited. As no one has performed in my family before and being in US, I was a bit sacred but after reading your blog and your advice I am relieved.

All what matters is devotion and that is going to be my guiding mantra.
Thank you once again !!
Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!

Thank you very much for all the advice...I was planning to keep Ganapati for a day and a half at home. We share the same idealogy at home but were a little confused as they say you should do Ganesh pujan very strictly etc. But after reading your blog it has put my mind to a rest. More than any elaborate pujas it is the purity of devotion that counts. Please also let me know about how to use turmeric to make the idol. Once again thank you very much.

Dear Abhilash
You have done a wonderful job in guiding so many persons. While a simple pooja or prayer may be enough, I feel some rituals/practises are to be followed to tie our mind to the pooja (like avoiding onion, reciting a particular prayer). Hope you will advise all to follow a minimum level of customs to discipline our minds.

@Siri You can do puja on any day. Ganesha is coming to your home. It is for you to decide when to welcome him and went to give him a sent off. So go ahead and invite Ganesha when you have time. What is important is devotion not rituals or dates. Thanks

Hi Abhilash,

Its nice of you to post this blog.
We have been doing Ganesha festival as long as I can remember. Am now abroad and see alot of Indians are so scared of doing the puja coz of strict rituals. I did it with whatever little was available and am so happy that I did. And I agree more that Ganesha really resides in our heart and puja done with a clean heart n mind is always acceptable.

Thanks again for your contribution.

For home puja you don't need a pandit. You can do a simple puja.

Puneeth said...

@ Tanmoy...You should visarjan after sunset at night after evening prayers.

There are no prayers except for giving thanks to Ganesha for visiting your home. You can pray for removal of all difficulties. Also remind him to come next year too.

If you can do visarjan at home in a bucket that will be very good and ecofriendly.

You can also sprinkle water and use the same murti next year.

Puneeth said...

No you don't need to do it every year or minimum number of years. Bringing Ganesha home is a choice of the individual.

No it is not compulsory. You don't need to keep Ganesha every year as this will be impossible in some years due to various reasons.

You can use the same murti next year. Perform a symbolic immersion by sprinkling water. Allow it to dry and keep it in a safe place and use it the next time.

When these idols are immersed in sea there is lesser risk of pollution in immediate future. But when immersed in pond or river water, it creates silting and pollution.
With increasing shortage of clean water for human consumption, it is our duty to preserve every drop of water.
Therefore, we all should vow to bring back big idols, which are made only for display and save them for the next season. Only the small idol, which is set up for Puja and Offerings should be the ideal form of worship.
As a matter of fact, big idols have become symbol of strength and status among the Ganesh Mandals every where. The authorities must also first motivate these Ganesh mandal organisers to stop buying big show piece idols and continue with their religious, cultural activities of Ganesh Festivities.
If our people do not understand the real significance of the truth, then the authorities must intervene and prohibit visarjan of any idols in water through out the country.
This is applicable to all kinds of immersion activities of all religions.

Hi!
My brother gets Ganpati every year at his home. I also would like to get Ganpati to my home. However, some one mentioned that you are not supposed to get two Ganpati Idol in one kutumb (especially if there are two real brothers). Wanted to check whether this belief is correct / logical?

Thank you so much for this.
happy ganesh chaturthi.

abhilaashji, thanks for the details for the ganesha-sthapana and pooja.
appreciate if you could suggest if in case I am not able to do sthapana on Chaturthi due to some reason, is there any other day on which symbolically the idol can be installed within these 10 days? surely the nakshtra/tithi falls on 19th but in the scriptures, is there any other date that can be used to do sthapana?
also, pls suggest the muhurta time for this sthapana and pooja.
many thanks again as always

@unknown...you can bring Ganesha also on September 21. This is also the day when Gauri is brought home in homes.

Hello, I read in comments that one can do symbolic immersion. And one of the comment said that one should not use the idol which is being used in daily puja. My question is: if I bring a small idol, do symbolic immersion, put that idol in my home mandir, and use the same idol next year. And repeat the cycle every year, is that a possible thing?

thanx for such an informative post, i really liked it. For the last continuous 2years Iam keeping fast on Ganesha chaturthi but this year Iam planning for lord Ganesha's sthapan also. Plz let me know about the auspicious day & time for Ganesha's idol sthapana as iam keeping fast on 19 september and what sort of food one should consume and avoid during Ganesha Chaturthi vrat.
also plz suggest me the precautions one should take when buying the Ganesha idol regarding Ganesha's hands, face & height etc.

Sharad Jhadav said...

@yes you can repeat it there is no problem. What matters is devotion all forms are of Ganesha.

@Best puja time is the entire day is good. Best performed during the morning hours.

@caddy star...You can opt for a single vegetarian meal on the day. You can also opt for fruits.

All murtis available in the market are made as per specifications.

We had installed Ganapati at home last year, but this year as we all are out to work and we cannot leave the house open we are not bringing Ganapati home on Ganesh Chaturthi.
Is it ok or we must bring the idol home very year. We started last year.

monica k said...

Hi,

We brought ganapati home for the 1st time last year. this year as we all are working we cannot leave the house open hence we are not bringing the idol home.
Is it ok or we MUST bring idol home every year for 5 years in continuation.

Hi,

I have a quick question.....is it a must that if we have started the ritual of keeping the Ganapati for 1.5 days...every year we have to do the same ? Cant we change it to 5 in middle if time permits ? Do we have to just stick to 1.5 days every year ? Please help...My mom is very concerned as this year we plan to keep it for 5 days but last couple of years we have kept it for 1.5 days.

S Jhadav said...

@monica...it is ok. Ganesha is not a god of whom you should fear. He understands his devotees. You can offer your prayers morning or evening that is more than enough.

Yes you can do it for 5 days there is no problem. It is for a devotee to decide how long he wants Ganpati in his home. There is no strict rules regarding this and you can change it depending on your need and time.

Thanks for the wonderful information.. one request from all those who are planning to get Ganesha idols.. plz. bring a small idol made of Mud (mitti ki murti) of ganesha and do the visarjan at your home in a tub and put the water in plants.. Visarjan means returning back to nature the sthapit idol.. This will save our water resources from getting polluted.. Try and think..

Thank you S Jhadav for the quick response.

Can i use same ganesha murti next year?and where i kept this murti for next year

Anonymous said...

Pls help me bcuse tomarrow is chaturthi

S Jhadav said...

Yes you can use the same murti. Just do a simple symbolic immersion by sprinkling water on the murti. Keep the murti aside and use it again. This is a good eco-friendly way of having Ganesh Chaturthi

Anonymous said...

All devotees may worship Ganesh murti while it is kept in their temple within the home. Why to worship Ganesha only during Ganesh Mahotsava but one should worship him on daily basis - that too first thing in the morning after having bath.

I am also like others bringing Ganesha for the first time to my house in Mumbai.Just an hour ago I went to my neighbours and asked them the rituals, half of them scared me by telling me that a Panditji must do the sthapna because he is a learned man and knows the rituals, however i knew it cant be possible because for God(be it in any form) all his beings are equal, what really matters is "shraddha". I googled to view the rituals and found this blog, which has really supported my views. Much appreciated and I offer my gratitudeness. Thank you.

@Sushmita...yes you can use it again there is no problem.
@Rajat...people have created lot of scary things about peace loving Ganesha. Forget them. Have devotion and offer prayers in the best way you can.

For the last few days I was planning to bring Ganoati Ji to our home. More was it when I saw the song in Agnipath (new) that this purely an indication of Ganpati Bapa that I shall bring Ganpati Ji to our home but I didn't share this with my wife as she is lot stressed because of our kids half yearly exams. Suddenly she said today to bring some Laddoo's . This is when I started searching vidhi for Ganpati puja n came across this post.

I want to thank you all for posting so simply on net. I am now planning to bring Ganpati Ji to our home.

I really like the fact that most of you stress on devotion more than rituals.

I am planning to do Ganesh Puja for next 11 days starting today with basics at home like my exisiting Ganesh idol and keep it away after peforming symbolic immersion , modaks prepared at home and fruits.

let me know if this is the correct way to go.

Thanks!

Can someone email me please with an explanation.

Lord Shiva is God himself, correct?
He gave life to Ganesha after the was given the elephant head, correct?
So my friends, what kind of God is this Shiva, who did not recognize his own son, yet he had the power of giving Ganesha life?
In English GOD means, the one who created the universe, the earth, the moons, human beings, animals, the only one who knows and controls everything, isn't that the meaning of God?
Then what kind of God is Shiva?????????
You guys believe anything and everything..

Many thanx for the article. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but at least it gives me the opportunity to raise any questions with the priest so that I may get clarity on what has been written. Sanjay Raman Bhowandas
