The apparent multiplication of gods is bewildering at the first glance, but you soon discover that they are the same GOD. There is always one uttermost God who defies personification. This makes Hinduism the most tolerant religion in the world, because its one transcendent God includes all possible gods. In fact Hinduism is so elastic and so subtle that the most profound Methodist, and crudest idolater, are equally at home with it.

Yes thats rightly said.
Hinduism believes in one Supreme God who created the universe. He is all-pervasive. He created many other Gods, highly-advance spiritual beings, to be his helpers.
Also there gets attached special significance to all of those Gods, that human beings get to understand and appreciate.
The writer is a person of Celtic origin and specifically Irish. These people have always had an interest in relgion and spirituality. They are adept at these matters and have a large number of philosophers and scholars active in the mystic. They dabble in every lore and come out with new teachings and theories. They are consistent and natural at this.
