Since modern world associates Tantra with sex, I took a peep into Tantric sexual literature. Several books and articles are available on Tantra and most of them just arouse sexual curiosity. Some confuses the reader. But some western scholars have done detailed study on the subject.
Here I am sharing some of my findings:
- It is hard to give a particular period to Tantrism. Most scholars believe it is pre-Vedic.
Shiva and Shakti are main gods in Tantrism. They are a symbol and represent the male and female. Some Tantric texts are conversations between Shiva and Shakti. - It has close relation to the modern Advaita philosophy of Shankarachraya, the oneness of all being. So, Tantrism believes that the ‘first life energy’ is present in all of us and we can invoke it in our activities in daily life including sex.
- Foreplay is of great importance in Tantric Sex. But Orgasm is given little importance. The period just before orgasm is of utmost importance. Tantric sex tries to maintain that particular effect for a long time – in fact for hours. This is often misunderstood as prolonged orgasm.
- The ardhanarishwara, half-man or half-woman, concept is a part of Tantrism. Touch, kissing, breathe all are used to create the energy by the partners. The partners unknowingly join in the cosmic dance – don’t mistake it for real dance. They gaze at each other and keep the eyes open in foreplay and forget about their surroundings. Several different types of touch are practiced in Tantric sex.
- There are several rituals, movements, touches and exercises in Tantric sex but it should not be practiced without the help of a knowledgeable person.

This is indeed an excellent post, too often tantra is tied to things irrelevant to its true meaning. For tantra teaches how to become human and how to live in Love peace and harmony. As a philosophy it is merely another form of non-dual neo-plantonic idealism, to use the words of western masters of philosophy. yet philosophy is irrelevant as it is but another form of maya, for the truth can never be understood intellectually.

It seems to me that the tantric sex rituals as you remarked are designed to arouse the senses( and the dormant mental powers) through foreplay.My analysis is that the mooladhara chakra gets activated as a result of the increased foreplay.This activity/energy is transmitted through the spine into the brain. Thus brain gets additional momentum and activity.The so called siddhis of the tantriks are achieved during this phase of heightened mental activity.
While I am glad to see someone has done their research on the subject... It all too often in the West happens in this manner that the primary focus of the study is the sexual part which is only a very small portion of the entire picture.
Tantra means Threads. It's many threads of Veda, Yoga, Mantram, Yantra, and other sciences xompounded over the ages to form a SCIENCE to invoke the divine.
In Tantra when you initiate you receive powers that are to be used for the good of others and the glory of god. Eventually you merge with the divine and BECOME the divine. This is one of the main goals.
Some Tantriks have abused the sexual small aspect and the Siddhi powers for personal gain and sexual relations with seekers of Tantra who do not know better... But powers and miracles that are not for the glory of God/dess is WITCHRAFT. And sex between an initiate of Tantra who tells a potential initiate they need to do sexual favors for the secrets of Tantra is ABUSE.
Even Christianity and the authority it gives in the West has been abused for selfish ends... And when someone uses God to justify or attain selfish desires they will end up in a very foul and hellish end, filled with torment.
Tantrikas should always strive to help others and to unify themselves with the divine.
It is a science of life, not sex. Sex just happens to be a part of life and there are various scientific methods of Tantra to employ to use this aspect ALSO to merge with the divine.

unfortunately, religion lives in reality, especially lives in the human beings who struggle for food,lust, power and dominance. From what I have learned in Tibetan Buddhism, which is really an extension of tantra Hinduism from its rituals, this branch has a lot more abusers than other religions, because of the significance tantra give to the sex rituals, as well as to many other human pleasures such as food, dominating the believer by giving them human waste as spiritual intake, etc. Really sad
I agree with devi maa Shaktinanda and i would only like to add that sex is only a part of Tantra but more important it frees u from bondage of the Universe.Moreover the orgasm in the sexual ritual results in implosion and not explosion as it happens in everyday life for human beings leading to possible conception.This implosion is a very difficult process i guess and is not for ordinary people but unfortunately people have a wrong notion about the sex rites in Tantra

I feel, the concept of shiv is erotic,which is tantra, but shiv's eroticism is not someting shamefull,as christinity thought. It is so greate, and so divine, that it cannot be equate with normal man's idea about sex. Humanity, whose idea about sex is just learned from mainly Islam and christinity, and they never think that Shiv's eroticism is an expresson of reason, which is vedant. and not mad orgy. We Indian have to teach the divinity of shiv.

Anonymous, the concept of Shiv's eroticism is a gross misconception. It is false and do not believe such things. There is nothing divine about senseless pleasure, and please don't misinterpret the divine as such. Erotica isn't the focus of tantra anyway, unlike some would like to believe. It was created image by the West who is always looking for an excuse to engage in such things.
I do believe that there are better ways of practicing than tantra, which is relatively recent and heterodox, contrary to some older scriptures. I suppose that everyone is free to choose their own path.
Vivekananda says 'Tantra is slippery ground and this land has had enough of Tantra.'
It is more important to focus on positive knowledge, vibrations than focus on basic human instincts. It is probably easy to link sex with tantra without understanding its depth and relevance to the process of unifying with the creator.

It is important that tantra is considered a heterodox (not orthodox) system that is very new. It is also easily misunderstood and corrupted. Not meaning to offend but the anonymous poster above who asked about tantra, presumably to try it with the "hindu guy" who this person claims to "love", is an example of misuse of tantra. The ideas of tantra are misguided from being easily corrupted for committing sin in - lust and self-gratification specifically - in the name of religion or seeking moksha (liberation/salvation). There are, I think, better ways of seeking moksha, like those mentioned in the Gita - bhakti (faith), jnana (knowledge), and karma (good action).
Tantrism should carry a label of caution with it. It is a very clever way by some to associate sexual acts with trying to receive energy from the cosmos. Sexual acts are not advised by many of the sages of the world for religious reasons.
Realistically speaking, the sexual act is an energy-consuming time-wasting action that can make the individuals involved tired, drained of energy and susceptible to contractable disease, internal disease of the organs involved in sexual activity/ reproduction. It also increases lust, attraction and fantasy (taking one dangerously away from reality). This can cause violence and murder; wars have been fought for the love of sex.
Moving oneself away from all forms of sexual act like heterosexuality, homosexuality, bestiality, paedophilia, sex-slavery, masturbation, so-called perversion etc. will allow one to channel their energy towards other things and open the channels to the cosmos in a different way.
The purpose of the sexual act is to procreate not to recreate.
In tantra sadhana SEX is ONLY a part of Sadhana.As Ravindra Mundkur told the energy created or accumilated is transferd to the brain through spine.Mooladhara is Shakthi and the energy created passes through all the other 5 chakras to reach the sahasrara chakra the "Lord Shiva".Tantra has a lot to do with Kundalini.Sex in tantra sadhana is a process of creating energy and transfering the energy to higher consciousness by activating all chakras in the path.

I like Ram Dass's take. His teachings have gotten better since his stroke and fall. He would say "Be content". Tantra is a state of mind/a place- where a woman invites a man or another woman- the bodies learn from fine tuning. If the heart and soul are given their rightly place to steer the ship of 'Self', then I say go forth! Teachings or bust! You'll be reborn for awhile either way. Go for the heart. Every component in the world has its good and bad.Universal theory known by all and we should not be in the situation to see only the sexual aspects of tantrism. I would like to comment on something Mr. Starhawk said. He said that the truth cannot be intellectually understood. If that were true, then we would not have the advaita philosophy, or any other philosophy for that matter.
The "absolute" advaita philosohy is the highest expression, intellectually understood philosoghy, of the truth in the world. One can have an absolutely perfect understanding of the truth.
Now, the advaita of the Tantrics is not absolute. That is to say, they do not have an absolute understanding. If they did, they would not be Tantrics but Advaitists. It is the philosophy and not the practice that really distinguishes the devotee.
It is the philosophy that makes one omniscient in mind, in intellectual understanding. The Buddha, for example was omniscient and omnipotent in spirit, in heart, but not in intellect. He didn't care for it, because salvation is in the heart and not the head.

Whether it's Tantra, Kamasutra, sex, Mandra, Ayurveda, Bhakti yoga , Hada Yoga, Kalari, Vastu shastra, Shilpa Shastra, Natya shastra,Jhana Yoga, Raja Yoga, karma yoga, Prana yama etc.. we can name many more actions relating to body or mind or thought, action all are methods for chitta virtti niroda (free the mind from all thoughts) and be one with divine. No other religion give such freedom of innumerable number of method where Hinduism excel all other religions. Even Hindus themselves are insecure and conservative to the infinite number of methods and the possibilities and openness of Hinduism. In modern days most Hindus become so narrow minded to only to social concept of politics, Power, Wealth. Hinduism offers ultimate freedom with ultimate happiness in past present and future and all lives one go on which more than 99.99% of Hindus don't understand all. According to Hinduism even when they don't understand it still thy are in the process of one method called ignorance to the union with the divine.

'Tantra' when translated in English becomes 'Technique'. Any Technique when used properly is always successful. Any Process or deed like reciting Mantras, all kinds of vedas, Bhakti, Hata, Jhana, Raja, karma or Prana yama Yoga, Kalari or any Martial Art, Vastu, Shilpa or Natya shastra, etc. needs to be done by the proper 'Technique' to become the Master of it. Hence, 'Technique' is the basic of everything you did, are doing or would do, but remember if not done in a proper way you may regret afterwords. That is the actual reason for the requirement of a Guru, Teacher or Master since Ancient Times.
Lets not talk about Lord Shiva, keep it strictly for Tantra and let's talk about that. What Shiva did and why he did not necessary.

Shiva is sky clad because he is digamaber like the Jains he does not keeps possession of any gold, silver etc... Also, he is bholenath and so he distrubes to others and keeps nothing for himself. Shiva and adinath of Jaina are one and same both are Rishabdev(lord of nandi rishaba) and jaina adinath was named as rishabdev. Both live in Kailash both are diagambar. Linga is the emblem of Digamber as Jains have sky clad statue. Also, Mostly remote tribal admire him in their way. People imagine him in the way in which they want that is why it is said in puranas that Shiva and Vishnu becomes what worshipper wants them to be.
There are many tribals even in Adaman and Nicobar who are naked and so they will visualize God in their form. If you are tall u will visualize god taller than you. If you are fair u will visualize god as fair skinned etc...

to my mind when I try to find the meaning of Tantra I think that it means "technique" so I think that our ancients have given us the the various ways one can attain the divine be it through meditation or yoga or set of rituals.

One of the meanings of TANTRA is expansion of mind, an average human uses about 5% of his brain power, TANTRA helps you to stretch this barrier. It is basically a mind game.

You just think what I am telling you. The fact is that NOBODY exist on earth or in heaven to tell us the ultimate reality or the truth because who soever attains the experience of the ultimate reality (atma gnan) looses his existances( the covering of all the seven dehas jada deha, sukshma deha, karan deha etc. and becomes one with the brahma). Then from where this philosophy in any religion comes. Yes it is by the great sages who are very close to the ultimate reality(but not attended the ultimate truth) and it is their perception about the ultimate turth but may not be the actual fact. This is why we are not clear about Shiv and shakti. Yours and mine idea of shiv and shakti is formed mostly by reading literature by the great sages and even by ignorant and selfish persons.
You will get God through enjoying sex ! what a nice idea. Then why to observe fast, do mantra japa and number of troublesome rituals. My dear friends you follow the philosophy of great sages like Vivekanand only. He has said that what ever anand(pleasure) you get(even sexual pleasure) through your panch-indria is just a small grain of the ocean of atmanand, but it leaves back its reaction which leads to take births after births. Then is there any other way to attend the atmanand ? Yes, there are severa good way like Bhakti marg, Nama japa marg, Karma yoga etc. So finally I would like to tell you that do not figure out shiva-shakti concept by reading books etc. and do not search god through trantrik sex, surely you won't get it but you will ruined yourself and others too. Such trantras are just creation of selfish persons giving support of fake sages in ancient time and fake stories of Shiva and Shakti. Such selfish personalities were in ancient time and there literature also. If this is not a fact then the great saints like Sai Baba, Vivekanand, Adya Shankaracharys and so many others who observed brahmacharya ( a great sacrifice) must be called fools, who followed such hard way instead of a very sweet TRANTRIK SEX, for self-realization.
If a simple concept is understood with respect to the way u as a reality exist...what one knows for sure.....that he himself exists and is breathing and experiencing life...comes into existence into this world only because of an union of his parents..there is no other way in which once comes into existence............. this union on the gross level creates u as an individual expression of unity..........the concept working behind this union is the union of Shiva and Shakti principles........and hence the understanding that this entire existence is out of the union of shiva and shakti principle............( if one further extends this principle...Shiva is also the Magnetic/Moon element and Shakti is the Electric/fire element....and the Vedas emphatically declares that this universe is AGNI SHMOMATMAKAM....and the modern science calls it to be Electro Magnetic)
this principal is the underlying principal of all Tantrik approaches.......and hence sex is only a aid or a tool to experience the ultimate divinity and as a process to merge with it..........this tantrik sex as stated in the Western parlance is not the thing at all....Tantra was always considered to rahasyam..........rahasyam in sanskit is commonly misunderstood to be kept as a secret....but it really means anubhavik vidya.............to experience it...........so in TANTRA which is considered to be the application science of VEDIC principles.......and sex is only a tool or an aid which under the guidance of ones guru need to be seen........and yes this aid also is not at all used like what we on the gross level have been using it....and yes its only with ones own wife (his shakti).........only in the rarest case may the guru as per the situation permit certain relaxations for this clause.......So this concept of SEX in Tantric practice is one of the Panch Makaras and at a high level of Veer upasana and is not at all a physical porcess but more of a higher consciousness experience........

Less known fact is that the majority of traditional Tantra is "white", and the practice is strictly in celibacy, while controlling the mind, speech, and bodily action. No hedonism here! :) The symbolism of genitals is purely of esoteric nature, used in disciplined and exact meditation on mystical union of Shiva and Shakti, and meditation on creative impetus for gradual manifestation of the universe, the ego, intelligence, mind, and five elements of ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. This is assisted by a specific meditation on a particular Yantra which is properly crafted and invoked under many elaborate rules and precise timing using the ancient astronomy and mathematics. Obviously, Tantra is not for an amateur, or a hobbyist! Without a firm grasp of philosophy and spiritual technology, without the guidance of a traditional and accomplished teacher from unbroken lineage (not a self-proclaimed one), and without the self-control, this practice is either impossible or useless.
True Tantra is mostly a meditation; an inner practice. Externally, it takes the form of a regulated daily puja (offering) to Shakti and Shiva, with initiation mantras, flowers, incense, sweets, and pure water. The other
"practices" which involve a physical contact, are for married couples that are too attached to sensuality, and need a way to regulate and sublimate their energies, to prevent a disturbance in society. Generally, the sensual aspect of Tantra is not recommended for serious practitioners, while altogether forbidden for single people and renunciates. There are other opinions in this regard, but the amazing results expected of a traditional Tantra are not achieved by catering to a popular vote of modernity, or latest "isms", but are based on ancient mechanisms of the Universe. They are handed down by Shiva and Shakti. Tremendous forces of volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and gravity that keeps planets in their orbit, are similarly not subject to politically correct diplomacy or personal opinion, but follow the laws created at the beginning of time.
Opposite of the "white", is the the "dark" tantra with ghastly activities involved. It is in minority, and leads to ghostly existence, and hellish regions. Not for attaining moksha, regardless of what they say, and how outlandish their magic tricks may appear to innocent folk. Some prostitutes (both male and female) also
misuse the word Tantra, while advertising their services under the pretense of "priesthood."
Someone else mentioned the fact that Tantra means "threads", and a "technique", so it would be interesting to note that there is a Vaishnav tantra, which consists of a daily meditation on Lakshmi-Narayan, coupled with various offerings of mantra, water, incense, flowers, deepa, etc. Purification of body and mind using mantra with water, praanayam, and mudra, is also technically considered a tantra, and in this case, a subsidiary of a regular puja for Deity...
The "Asuras" try to warp the Dharma by adding fraudulent information which they have been doing for some time now.
The so-called western world, and fraudulent "Asura" religions will do any thing to wipe out the competition.
"The Tower of Babel" clearly proves that the Triple "Abrahmic Religions" are "Asuras".
"Babel" means Confusion of Sounds = Asuras
Lets not forget that the "Asuras" will always remain our enemy, until their dark ore is destroyed.
The Triple "Abrahmic Religions" are nothing more than "Tripura" -- and their Complete destruction is inevitable at the hands of "Shiva" as the destroyer of Three dark cities
No matter how many lies, and deception the "Asuras" create, their back stabbing ways will be the reason for their undoing.
They will be annihilated, rest assured.
