Origin of Hinduism - II

There is an ongoing controversy over the origin of Hinduism. The traditional view is that Hinduism originated around 3000 BCE. But various modern scholars have challenged the 3000 BCE origin story. They argue that Hindu religion originated somewhere between 3500 and 5000 BCE. The 5000 BCE origin story is backed by the findings from Indus Valley Civilization.

I am not an historian. But I read what historians write in various newspapers and magazines. Although I did have my reservations on the 5000 BCE story, I too accepted it for academic purposes.

During my childhood I also took pride like other Hindus in the fact that our religion is the oldest in the world. There is no doubt that Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world, especially for those people who think it in terms of religion.

But as I grew up, I understood the futility of the history of Hinduism. But I still read the various arguments that take place between the modern scholars regarding the origin of Hinduism.

Then one day I stumbled upon on an article in The Hindu in 2001.

Similarly, it was on the banks of the Bolan on the Baluchistan rim of the Indus valley that the earliest agricultural community of the Indian subcontinent came into being. This community lived and farmed in Mehrgarh and its c.7000 BC pattern of agriculture, based on wheat, barley, cattle and sheep only reached the Indus flood plains after many millennia had elapsed.

Nayanjot Lahiri in her article is talking about a full flourished culture 2000 years before Indus Valley Civilization. Tell me now, should I believe the 5000 BCE story? Or should I wait for another modern scholar to give me a new older period.

New research will find a new archeological site and it will reveal another older date. And the fight will continue among modern scholars regarding the history of Hinduism.

Will pinpointing a particular date change the essence of Hinduism?

To be continued

The Indus Valley Aryan Invasion Theory has been disproven many times by historical, linguistic, and cultural - it is only prolonged by idiot public schools and old-time historians wanting to degrade the religion and culture of ancient India.

Trying to find the origin of Hinduism is like trying to find GOD. Haven't we heard of people trying to find God and never came back..... for an example a few people went out find the Makara Jyothi in Sabarimala, what happened to them... They became History.... So please leave it like that, don't try and find the History of Hinduism, you will be History your self.....

Ours is a Religion without a name. As rightly said by Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi MahaSwamiji of Kanchi. Since it was the only religion at that time and followed by all. There was no need for a name.

HI FRIENDS,
GOOD WE ALL BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A GOOD WHO CREATED EVERY THING. SO WHEN WE ARE ALIVE THE GOD MUST BE ALSO ALIVE. NOW IF YOU ARE TRULY DESPERATE TO FIND OUT WHO IS THE GOD? TRY THIS FOR YOURSELF.
FROM A CALM PLACE IN YOUR HOUSE, CLOSE YOUR EYE AND SINCERELY ASK THE GOD “IF THERE IS A LIVING GOD REVEAL YOURSELF TO ME”. THEN YOU WILL KNOW WHO HE IS.
HAVE A HAPPY LIFE

The exact origin of Hinduism is an incredible and impossible task. Uniquely, Hinduism has no one divine personality , no one single scripture but several divine personalities and more than one scripture, to say the least.
The word Hindu is an anachronism
(This word is derived from Sindhu- the name of a river which flowed in the then ancient India and now flows in Northwest Pakistan) .
And the inhabitants of the Sindhu -shores began to be known as Hindus by some 'foreigners' who ever they were. Some say, they were Europeons and yet others say that they came from a neighboring region. WHATEVER THE WAYS LIFE OF THE SINDHUS(HINDUS) BECAME HINDUISM. Before that WAY OF LIFE became Hinduism, it was known to be SANATANA DHARMA meaning ETERNAL LAW. And how long has it existed, there can be only guestimates. In any case, according to Historians, Hinduism per se has been identified as the OLDEST religion. And its age is 3000-5000 years or more.

Dear Freinds,

I am very sorry to note that, no one has never understood what is Hindu means. For your kind information the Persians who came to india before 3000 B.c through Kaiber and polan, much impressed with the civilisation of Indus Vally which was existed in the banks of SINDHU river which is basically belongs to Dravidians. The persians found it difficult to pronounce the word "Sindhu" hence pronounced them Hindus.

One more fact I want to tell you that Hindu is not related to a religion and it is the style and high standard of life of Dravidians who are the owners of Indus valley civilisation. It is The Aryans who twisted the fact and made propaganda that Indus vally belongs to Aryans.

The name Hindu religion came to practise only in the period of 18th Century A.D, when Williams Jones a british governor wanted to differentiate people other than Christians, Muslims and Seekhs. This is the story of Hindu religion.

everyone in the western world seems to forget that india is called the "indian SUBCONTINENT' it was an island by itself and it eventually crashed into asia to form the himaliya mountain range. there were indians living there before the aryan invasion from the north, these indians still reside in india and they are the dravidians of south india, hinduism has an origin but the origin does not matter even matter if it was yesterday we respect the thoughts and teachings of this spiritual way today

If you look at the evolution of mankind, it can be said that the origin of Hinduism is contemporary to the origin of man. Man saw nature in its pristine form-both benign and malign-his primitive mind started wondering as to what could these events be.These events occurred not once or twice but with random frequency transcending many many generations. He saw and came to understand that he had only a limited period to live on the surface where he was living. But he realised that these events recurred and never stopped at some fixed point of time. His then confused mind -since it was just evolving-would have started thinking as to what could these events be.This thinking would have led to his belief that beyond him and far away from him, there was SOMETHING OR SOMEONE SOMEWHERE ABOVE his own terrain bigger, more powerful and more permanent than himself. So, he started respecting that "Unknown power".When his brain evolved and his thinking capacity became more organised, he started attributing charecteristics to that power. In course of time, he added colour to his imagination and nature became a superior force. Some enlightened souls might have attributed forms and visions to these various aspects of nature. He did not know how to put these ideas across to the community. So he developed some sort of communication tools. And language was born. Then he might have thought that just saying something does not convey the sense. So he discovered the art of drawing and then painting. His brain evolved still further and he started putting more decorum and colour to the language. So began the poems. Then he found that stringing the poems in a certain manner creates pleasure and so evolved music. From music, some people with highly developed people might have composed 'Shlokas". And then these people started singing the praise of nature attributing various work functions for different display of nature. So began the use of names like "fire, Wind, Water" etc. And this was the beginning of a CODE OF CONDUCT for man. This CODE prescribed the rules of living and the rules of "APPRECIATING" nature for its benefits. There was nothing called "RELIGION" as such. It was just a CODE. More enlightened or empowered human group might have used this CODE to subjugate less intelligent or weaker human group. And to intimidate them might have evolved the word "Religion".the word "HINDU" does not occur anywhere in ancient scriptures. It must have been coined by "Outsiders" who migrated to Indus Valley and wanted to identify those already living there. And thus began "HINDUISM". It has no seperate beginning apart from the beginning of mankind. It is as old as mankind itself.

does the origin time makes any difference in to feel proud to belong to this religion ?
i think people who follow , believe don't go in matters of dispute, only people who want to prove go into such details for winning arguements.

Putting a name to something helps us to understand but the understanding changes according to our level of consciousness. Everyone sees from where they are at any one time. When our minds become able to encompass infinity or God then we can know Universal Truth. The Ultimate Truth is that which never changes. The knowledge which makes up what we call Hinduism does not change but our interpretation changes as we change and grow until we attain enlightenment. Hinduism exists throughout the universe from beginning to end. The cycle then repeats forever. Ultimately there is only infinity or God. Sanskrit is the language of God and the basis of creation and all it involves. No man made up this language. Sages and Rishis heard it , recorded it and passed it down to us via the Pundits and Holy Texts such as the Vedas. What we call Hinduism always was and always will be. As others have correctly stated, it has no beginning and no end just like a circle. One should be glad to know to know these things. Always seek the Truth. Dr. S.
